The concept of Earth Hour is to raise awareness of the human impact on the environment. In 2008, Earth Hour had tens of millions of participants. This is where Earth Hour was truly successful. In just three years, tens of millions of participants worldwide were increased to over 1.3 billion participants worldwide. People are also now more aware of the concept of carbon footprints and the idea of renewable energy.
Even if this is merely a symbolic event, and does not actually save any energy in total, it is truly inspirational that so many people worldwide can come together for one event. Earth Hour raises awareness that our environment is fragile and that even a small change could help improve it.
