Reflection: Healthy eating, Sustainaible eating, systems thinking

The video Ms. Cindy showed me in class taught me that humnan are really selfish. Over the years, people started getting fat. And the reason why is that the number of fast food and unhealthy food increased rapidly. Getting fast food became easier and cheaper than getting healthy food like vegetables. I think we should change the system of food,if we don't change something will happen to us and the world. I really want people to go back and live a healthy life.

Eco friendly products:

I'm going to make Eco friendly products, which can help the environment and make our life easier.

Bamboo sheets:

The bamboo bed sheets are the best bamboo sheets. It is 100% Viscose material and its super soft material. From the reviews on amazon and the quality that they offer, this one is a great bed set. They offer both queen size and king size sets and come with 4 pieces. A bed cover, sheet and two pillow cases. The dimensions of the queen set are 2 Pillowcases which is 21 x 32″ and the Flat Sheet is 96 x 105″ and the Fitted Sheet is 60 x 81 x 16″. The king sized sheet set come with 2 Pillowcases which are 21 x 32″ and the Flat Sheet is 96 x 105″ and the Fitted Sheet is 60 x 81 x 16″. The Cal King bed sheet size is a bit bigger with the 2 Pillowcases sized at 21 x 32″ and the Flat Sheet being 96 x 105″ and the Fitted Sheet being 60 x 81 x 16″.

Reflection Back to the start

This video showed me how selfish people are. Animals such as pigs, cows sacrifice its life just for people's meal. We might think it's ok to eat because other people are eating and it's impossible to stop. But if we show people how selfish we are, people will start to change. I decided to be half vegeterian after watching video. I really want animals to be free and live along the environment.

Feeding the world:
Picture of famine, Shorten of food. Condition that occurs when there is not enough calories. Don't get enough nutrition.

World Food problem:
Unequal distribution: how thigns get divided. People not getting the same amount of food. Poor people have lesser food. Richer people eat more.
Drought and Famine: People might starve to the death.
Green revolution: purpose to increase the crops. By starting agriculture. Negative: needs more water in order to grow more plants.
Also, farmers.
Peope trying to help. Don't waste your food.

Agriculture and soil:
Plowing helps crops grow by mixing soil
Fertilization
Urrigation:
Pest control:
Fertile soil: soil that can support the growth of healthy plants is called fertile soil.
Soil erosion: Erosion is the wearing away of rick or soil by wind.
Land degradation: damages the land so that it can no longer supoort the local ecosystem.

Animals and agriculture:
Catching and removing organisms. Can cause an extinction.
Government tried to stop it by creating a fishing zone.
Agriculture: fish farm. It began 4000years ago in China. There are 2 ways. Fish farm and branch. Fish farm is to raise a fish. Branch raise salmons and let them go.
Can cause a water pollution.

Textbook notes

Chapter 16 Section 1

A mineral is a naturally occuring usually inorganic solid that has a characteristic chemical composition, an orderly internal structure, and a characteristic set of physical properties.
Minerals are made up of atoms.
Ore Minerals: Minerals that are valuable and economical to extract are known as ore minerals.
Metallic Minerals: Ore minerals are either metalliic or non metallic. Metals conduct electricity have shiny surfaces, and are opaque. The are mostly negative
Non Mentallic Minerals: Tend to be good insulators, have shiny or dull surfaces, and may allow light to pass through them.
Non metals are among the most widely used minerals in the world.

Section 2
Mining companies can indentify areas where there is a high likelihood of inding valuable mineral resources inquantities that are worth mining.
Exploring rock for mineralization is the first step in finding an ore deposit.
Planes are carry instrunments that indentify paterrns in gravity, magnetism, or photographs of an area.
Subsurface mining: Earth's surface are mined by using Subsurface mining methods.
Surface mining methods are used when ore deposits are located close to Earth's surface.
When rock weatehrs and disintegates, minerals within the rock are released.
Placer deposits: These minerals are concentrated by wind and water into surface deposits called placer deposits

Section 3
Because of the potential environmental impacts of mining on such a large scale, mining has become one of the most heavily regulated indistries in the United States.
The Environmental impacts of mining: In the United states, the federal and state governments and mining companies are spending billions ofdollars to clean up abandoned mines.
Surface mining can cause both air pollution and nouse pollution. Noise is crated by the equpment taht is used in a mine as well as by blasting.
Because of air and nouse pollution, most surface mines are not located near urban populatins.
Water resources can be negatively impacted by mining. Coal or minerals that contain a lot of sulfur can cause a similar problem.
Displacement of wildlife: Removing soil from a surface mine site strpis awat all plant life. Dredging can negatively affect aquatic ecosystems and physically chagne the bottoms of rivers.
Subsidence: The sinking of regions of the ground with little or no horizontal movement.
Reclamation: The process of returningland to its original or better condition after mining is completed is called reclamation.

Chapter 17 section 1

The fuels we use to run cars, ships, planes and factories and to produce electricity are natural resources.
Fossil Fuels are the remains of ancient organisms that changedinto coal, oil, or natural gas. Fossil fuels are central to life in modern societies.
The energy in fuels is often converted into electical energy in order to pwoer machines.
The quality of coal varies.
An electric generator is a machine that converts mechanical energy, or motion, into elevtrical energy.
Everything from the food you eat to the clothes you wear requires energy to produce.
There are dramatic diffrences in fuel use and efficiency throughout the world.
Petrolcum: Oil that is pumped from the ground is also know as crude oil, or petroleum.

Section 2
Nuclear power plants get their power from nuclear energy, the energy within the nucleus of an atom.
These collisons cause the nuclei to split in a process called nuclear fission.
A nuclear reactor is surrounded by a thick pressure vessel that is fulled with a cooling fluid. The pressure vessel is designed to contain the fission products in case of an accident.
Nuclear energy has many advantages. Nuclear fuel is a very concentrated energy source.
Building and maintaining a safe reactor is very expensive. As a resuly nuclear power is no longer competivive with other energy.
The difficulty of finding a safe place to store nuclear wastes is one of the greatest disadvantages of nuclear power. The fuel cycle of uranium products fission priducts that can remain dangerously radioactive for thousands of years.
Nuclear fission: One possible future energy source is nuclear fusion.  Nuclear fusion occurs when lightweight atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus and relase tremendous amounts of energy.

agree with earth hour. even though does not really help, it is smth that brings ppl together.

-if don't use beeswax candle, other candles will produce carbon dioxide.
-battery stays for a very very long time after you throw it away.

-In sydney, during that hour, they dropped 7-12% of energy consumption.

Nam

earth hour will help people.

-bring awareness to people and bring concern to ppl that earth is in danger.
-earth hour is actually saving energy in a long term.

-the candles actually produce a lot of carbon dioxide.
-need more energy to bring back the electricity.

Dina and Inaho

if we join earth hour, we can save the energy.

-in thailand, 1,699 megawatt of reduction during earth hour 2013.

-earth hour will cause emission to increase.

Sonia and Ruchika

Earth Hour is really helpful.

-helps to reduce the usage of energy globally all around the world.

-candles release many potential harmful chemicals into the air.

Erin

Earth Hour is not effective.
in canada, the largest electricity company said 205 megawatt reduce of energy which is about reduce in 75%.

Alice and Jessica

earth hour is not that good. Only 1 hour.

in asia, a lot of celebrities are supporting for this campaign.
-earth hour actually emit a lot of C02 because people use a lot of candles.

PLoy: Earth hour rises to the whole world.
Against: turning on and off lights will use more energy
People will commit crimes, more accidents
Lily and Jane: Maximum participation of consumer. Many countries joined for earth hour.
Raise awarness about earth hour
Earth hour took place on saturday. Eco repts estimate over 200 people came out to show how much the university of arizona cares about the environment.
Earth hour was first conceived by the WWF in Australia in 2004 in resopnse to scientific data that showed impact of climate change.
Leila: Earth hour provides material for schools
Earth hour teaches a two part lesson pla in educating on the carbon footprint.
Social values: Unity amongst a commuinity.
Global scale of awarness
Percenption of capacity without electrity.
All of earth's electricity off=4minutes of China's power plants off
"natural" candles used. Electicity should be celebrated not shunned.

Relflection

When i first heard about the Earth Hour, I was against it. I thought that Earth Hour was a good event but not that good to save the Earth. But as I learned and knew more about the Earth Hour it taught me something. It taught me that Eventrough one hour won't make a change to the earth it will atleast give an awarness to people who doesn't know the seriousness of the earth right now. This event is not just an event. Its an event that reminds people that our earth is in a problem and we have to do something about a place we are living in. I also think there are a lot of factos in this event such as environmental, and educational.

I think we spent a lot of time studying and presenting the idea of Earth Hour. We asked teachers about how they think about Earth Hour. And many people had a different perspective on Earth Hour. Some people were against and Some people were agreeing with it. From this, I've learned that we have to spread the idea of Earth Hour to the people who are against it and people who doesn't know anything about Earth Hour. I learned a lot from this project and i really want to support Earth Hour.

Thursday Class - Earth Hour Project Part 2 - continued

The concept of Earth Hour is to raise awareness of the human impact on the environment. In 2008, Earth Hour had tens of millions of participants. This is where Earth Hour was truly successful. In just three years, tens of millions of participants worldwide were increased to over 1.3 billion participants worldwide. People are also now more aware of the concept of carbon footprints and the idea of renewable energy.
Even if this is merely a symbolic event, and does not actually save any energy in total, it is truly inspirational that so many people worldwide can come together for one event. Earth Hour raises awareness that our environment is fragile and that even a small change could help improve it.

http://voices.yahoo.com/the-impact-earth-hour-8159761.html

Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) reported that that on March 26th, 2011, between 8:30pm and 9:30pm, due to conservation action during the last episode of Earth Hour, province-wide demand for electricity fell by 360 megawatts or 2.1% compared to a typical Saturday evening in late March.

Earth hour debate

From Mr. Eubin:
1. Yes, Heard it from BBC
2. Their idea is good and eco friendly, but it's actually not helping and also not changing anything.

3. It's actually not helping people whould turn off their light for an hour and the next day they would just drive their big cars everywhere
4.No, because it's not helping anything.

My hypothesis:
I think Earth Hour is a bad idea. The earth hour might help the enviornment but just a little. People will just turn off the light for an hour and the next day they will just drive their cars and turn on air condition. It might be a good idea but I think there are many ways to save the earth beside 'Earth Hour'.

Earth hour Taking note

Earth Hour is the largest, participation event in the world.   It mobilizes people to take action on climate change, it also inspires
a global community of millions of people in 7,001 cities and towns across 152 countries to swith lights off.
The earth hour campaign was held on saturday march 23 at 8:30 to 9:30 wherever we are in the world and objectives were to protect the
planet.
In Uganda, the world’s first Earth Hour Forest was allocated with 2700 hectares of land, challenging Ugandans to fill it with 500,000
trees to fight against the 6000 hectares of deforestation that occurs in the country every month.
BOTSWANA just released a program called 'One million Trees plant for life' as part of their campaign.
And the earth hour campaign is spreading fast and hve more than 200000 commitments from individuals, governments, businesses taking
actions for our planet.
There are also famous people who is spreading the campaign Earth Hour, such as Andy, and tawainese celebrities.growing Asia, both as
an economic powerhouse and as an influential hub for global initiatives such as Earth Hour - the celebrities represent a total
population of more than 4 billion people, so their influence and engagement drives participa  tion to an often young, vibrant motivated
group of participants.

Reflection question 1 and 2

1. What does this video have to do with "environmental science" and our concept of a "sustainable world"?

This video have to do with "environmental science" and our comcept of "sustainable world" because it is obviously about environment and how its polluting our world. The video is basically about people polluting our world as technology grows. We cut down trees, use oil, and make more factories. And by doing this it's hurting our world and even us. And in order to make a sustainable world we have to start using less plastic bags, papers, phones, and other things that affects our world.

2. What can we do to prevent the "GOLDEN ARROW" as environmental science students in a school?

I've changed a lot after watching this video, it really changed my perspective on computers, plastic, papers and more. I thinked again before doing something and tried my best to save the eart so we can prevent the "Golden Arrow". I really effected me. And wanted to spread it to the school. We have to start using electronic devices to do homeworks, assignments and stop printing out papers. Also, we can make posters and spread the imformation about the serious situation that is happening right now and make a move. I think we can make a diffrence by doing this. People will start to know how serious it is and atleast think about the environment before doing something that harms the environment.

Reflection about story of stuff

I've watched "story of stuff" in ms Cindy's class. It was a video about toxic, pollution and how it affects the world. Nowadays, people can't live without money and everyone want money. But in order to be rich we need to use the natural resources to make and sell the product. So people started to cut down trees and use natural resourses and chemicals to make money. I didn't know the seriousness about the pollution before watching the video but after watching it, i felt guity. I think this video is a good video to motivate people to think again about the enviornment. From now on I'm going to think before i buy something for the environmnet and our world.

My Hybrid speech

A hybrid is any vehicle that uses two or more sources of power for propulsion.

Most hybrid cars are built in the economy car mold. Compared with cars that have similar designs and features, a hybrid car can cost 25 to 30 percent more than a comparable car,

While electric cars are expensive and can double your energy bill when re-charging at home, many early adopters say they're still worth the price, since they help the environment and reduce the need for foreign oil.

The reasons why smart people do not buy Electric or Hybrid cars are: Batteries are expensive, short lived, efficiency isn’t 100 % and the electricity is not free. Going electric you won’t decrease Air Pollution because 50 % of the electricity is produced by burning COAL. By the way a Jetta Diesel, TDI for $23000 makes 40MPG. With a full tank of Chevy Volt, driving non-stop, you make 37MPG, plus $3 or more, the price of electricity you charged 16.0-kW-hr lithium-ion, the hefty 750-pound batterypack.

Electric cars actually harm the environment more than their gas-powered counterparts in many places

the report said—they may even wind up causing more carbon emissions than gas burners. In addition, electric car batteries require toxic minerals like nickel, copper, and aluminum, increasing the potential for acidification

Speech Reflection

I really enjoyed doing this assignment(speech). It was something new for me and my friends. When Ms. Cindy first talked about the speech i didn't know what to do because i can't act at all. She told us to act and speak like other people (friends, singer, actor, actress).I spent more than 1 hour thinking what should i do?, Who should i be? And i chose to be Fred. He was the easiest person to follow, because he's my friend.
I was against the Hybrid car in the speech. During the speech i talked about the bad and cons about the hybrid cars. My main points were. 1. It takes long time to charge them and pollutes while charging, more than buring fuel. 2. It is more expensive than normal cars, it's hard for us to buy.
And I'm still against the Hybrid cars, As i said, It's too expensive and takes too much electricity to charge them. I think there are more ways to save the environment, such as riding bicycle, walking.

Hybrid speech notes

Jane

According to an observations done by economists , it is proven that hybrid cars will
be much more expensive to maintain because of the battery. Even though people say it will
get cheaper as hybrid cars get more common, the price would still be high for several years.
Also, Just because you're plugging in your car to power it up doesn't mean you're
automatically using clean energy.
Lily
For some, these issues in importance to saving the planet from
harmful emissions of carbon, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide—all of which are released
from combustion engine vehicles. If battery powered cars reduce emissions, they should be
produced and consumers should be enticed to buy them. Jessica
Wants a clear and beautiful world but cannot because of air pollution, so she believes that the
hybrid car is the solution to a clean and beautiful world.

Sonia
hybrid car is the solution to air pollution because use less gas/oil. Can
charge, creates less pollutions.

Alice
cure for air pollution because the hybrid car and be charge, no emission
from the car. If the car’s energy were charge with renewable energy then there would be zero
emission from the car. Air quality would be better and tax is lower because electricity taxes are
lower compare to diesel/ petroleum.

Leila
You need to charge the car for 8 hour because if
you run out the battery you need to charge it. The cars are not going to get recycle other part that gets throw away
gets into the ocean. Car manufacture needs to have the same battery, for the safety issue.

May
Hybrid car can charge which would make the air pollution better because no need that much
petroleum oil, save the money of the people because the car does not need to go and get oil
from the gas station. Have a quote about the environment.  The taxes for the car are cheaper
because more environmental friendly, the price is higher but if lots of people buy then it can be
change.

Madina
People are using hybrid car and thinking that they are
doing right helping environment. Hybrid cars are not helping.  In fact, hybrid and electric cars
are simply perpetuating our dependency on a system that is notorious for creating pollution,
and are just making us feel better about ourselves.

Inaho
Electric cars such as hybrid car can be defined as an environmentally friendly car which is
propelled by a finely tuned gasoline or diesel engine in combination with an electric drive
which is used in city or in slow moving traffic.
The most numerous reasons which people buy electric cars and hybrid
cars are that they get better mileage than conventional cars and it means that they reduce
CO2 and exhaust gas.

Ramita
Can cure air pollution. Can help lessen air pollution. We should all think of using electric cars.
Hybrid Cars is electric car that is expensive, but will help the environment. Can be used to
protect the environment because the benefit of it is that we can save money on petroleum or
gas.

Jaspriya
In Bombay, have so many pollutions in which hybrid cars can cure.
Hybrid cars need to be charged, but in the
future there will be a charger that can charge the car for longer hours so that people do not
need to change the battery a lot.

Erin
If you add total c02 that is produced by
electric car, the hybrid car is simply not the solution. Where do you think the hybrid cars get
their energy from? They are all from pollution sources. In Norway, a study about the car have
been conducted.
Fred
will decrease the use of gasolines and the
using of oils too. By using small amount of gasoline and oil, the hybrid cars emit very small
amount of carbon dioxide per. mile. The electric cars are much more expensive, but by
calculating the usage of oil like the traditional cars, it is kind of cheaper. By using less oil, it
will reduce air pollution and reduce the rate of acidic rate. It will be an advantage for our
economic, environment, and health.

Ploy
Electric car are powered by electric batteries. It can switch the usage from batteries to
gasoline. It will be the cure for air pollutants because it is very efficient in that it can use
gasoline when they want to. Respiratory health for people would be better. Also, it would
lessen noise pollution because they are quieter. The government supports for the electric
cars. Hybrid Cars weigh smaller engine.
Nam

The car contribue to clean air in the city because they do not emit harmful air into the air such
as nitrogen oxide, or carbon monoxide. The improvement in our urban air quality will be
dramatic.

Ruchika
I am going to be talking about that electric cars are no cure for environment. Many people
would not even be able to buy the car because it is very expensive, and it can be
uncomfortable for some people. Also, it can be a waste of space for the house where there
are a lot of members in the family. I

Water pollution research

Water Pollution

Water pollution is the introduction of chemical, physical, biological, agents into water that degrade water quality and adversely affect the organisms that depend on the water.

Types of pollution:

point source pollution:  Point source pollution is a pollution that is discharged from a single source.

Non point source pollution:, unlike pollution from industrial and sewage treatment plants, comes from many diffuse sources. NPS pollution is caused by rainfall or snowmelt moving over and through the ground. As the runoff moves, it picks up and carries away natural and human-made pollutants, finally depositing them into lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal waters, and even our underground sources of drinking water.

Waste water: is water that contains waste from homes or industry. At a wastewater treatment plant , water is filtered and treated to make the water clean enough to return to a river or lake. Examples of waste water pollution: Treating wastewater, sewage sludge.

Artificial Eutrophication:  The natural process of Eutrophication is accelerated when inorganic plant nutrients , such as such as phosphorus and nitrogen, enter the water from sewage and fertilizer runoff. Eutrophication caused by humans is called Artificial Eutrophication that occurs because of the introduction of inorganic plant nutrients into a body of water through sewage and fertilizer runoff.

Thermal pollution: When the temperature of a body of water, such as a lake or stream, increases, can result. Thermal pollution can occur when power plants and other industries use water in their cooling systems and then discharge the warm water into a lake or river.

Groundwater pollution: Groundwater pollution is a type of pollution which occurs when groundwater becomes contaminated. Around the world, groundwater pollution is a very serious and costly problem, and many governments have started to take aggressive action to address it. Once contaminated, groundwater is very expensive to clean up and make usable again, and in some cases, an aquifer may be so contaminated that it has to be abandoned, which can put tremendous pressure on a community as it attempts to find a new supply of water.

Ocean pollution: Ocean pollution can kill fish, plants and animals, spoil beaches and swimming areas, and make people ill.

Ocean pollution can be prevented by banning the use of the dangerous forms of agricultural chemicals, building sewage treatment plants, using aircraft to follow and monitor ships, and using laws to stop industry dumping waste in the rivers and seas.

Water pollution in Thailand

The quality of the water in the country's major rivers, including the Chao Phraya, is worsening while the air in Bangkok has become more polluted, the 2010 Thailand Pollution Report says.

The annual report, conducted by the the Pollution Control Department and released yesterday, showed the state of the environment in Thailand deteriorated in almost all aspects.

Scientists examined water quality in 48 major rivers and freshwater sources nationwide and found that 39% of the water sources were poor quality, increasing from 33% in 2009.

SAVE THE WATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1.  Use broom instead of hose

2. When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.

3. Some refrigerators, air conditioners and ice-makers are cooled with wasted flows of water. Consider upgrading with air-cooled appliances for significant water savings.

4. Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk, or street.

5. Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.

6. Choose shrubs and groundcovers instead of turf for hard-to-water areas such as steep slopes and isolated strips.

7. Install covers on pools and spas and check for leaks around your pumps.

8. Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Compost vegetable food waste instead and save gallons every time.

9. take bathe together

10. Turn off the water while you wash your hair to save up to 150 gallons a month.

Channel island research

The Channel Islands (Norman: Îles d'la Manche, French: Îles Anglo-Normandes or Îles de la Manche) are an archipelago of British Crown Dependencies in the English Channel, off the French coast of Normandy. They include two separate bailiwicks: the Bailiwick of Guernsey and the Bailiwick of Jersey. They are considered the remnants of the Duchy of Normandy, and are not part of the United Kingdom. They have a total population of about 168,000 and their respective capitals, Saint Peter Port and Saint Helier, have populations of 16,488 and 28,310. The total area of the islands is 194 km².
The Bailiwicks have been administered separately since the late 13th century; common institutions are the exception rather than the rule. The two Bailiwicks have no common laws, no common elections, and no common representative body (although their politicians consult regularly).a
The Channel Islands fall into two separate self-governing bailiwicks, the Bailiwick of Guernsey and the Bailiwick of Jersey. Both are British Crown Dependencies, and neither is part of the United Kingdom. They have been part of the Duchy of Normandy since the 10th century and Queen Elizabeth II is often referred to by her traditional and conventional title of Duke of Normandy. However, pursuant to the Treaty of Paris (1259), she governs in her right as The Queen (the "Crown in right of Jersey",[and the "Crown in right of the république of the Bailiwick of Guernsey"),[and not as the Duke. This notwithstanding, it is a matter of local pride for monarchists to treat the situation otherwise: the Loyal Toast at formal dinners is to 'The Queen, our Duke', rather than to 'Her Majesty, The Queen' as in the UK.
A bailiwick is a territory administered by a Bailiff. Although the words derive from a common root ('bail' = 'to give charge of') there is a vast difference between the meaning of the word 'bailiff' (English) and 'Bailiff' (CI). (The former is a court appointed private debt-collector authorised to collect judgment debts, while the latter is the most important citizen within his or her Bailwick.) The Bailiff in each Bailiwick is the civil head, presiding officer of the States, and also head of the judiciary.
In the early part of the twenty-first century, the existence of governmental offices such as the Bailiffs' which incorporate multiple roles straddling the different branches of Government came under increased scrutiny for their apparent contravention of the doctrine of separation of powers—most notably in the Guernsey case of McGonnell -v- United Kingdom (2000) 30 EHRR 289 which following final judgement at the European Court of Human Rights became part of the impetus for much recent constitutional change, particularly the Constitutional Reform Act 2005 (2005 c.4) in the UK itself, including the separation of the roles of the Lord Chancellor, the abolition of the House of Lords' judicial role, and its replacement by the UK Supreme Court. The Islands' Bailiffs however, still retain their historic roles.
The systems of government in the Islands date from Norman times, which accounts for the names of the legislatures, the States, derived from the Norman 'États' or 'estates' (i.e. the Crown, the Church, and the people). The States have evolved over the centuries into democratic parliaments.

Each island has its own primary legislature, known as the States of Guernsey and the States of Jersey, with Chief Pleas in Sark and the States of Alderney - the Channel Islands are not represented in the UK Parliament. Laws passed by the States are given Royal Assent by The Queen in Council, to whom the islands' governments are responsible.
The islands are not part of the European Union, but are part of the Customs Territory of the European Community by virtue of Protocol Three to the Treaty on European Union. In September 2010 a Channel Islands Brussels Office was set up jointly by the two Bailiwicks to develop the Channel Islands' influence with the EU, to advise the Channel Islands' governments on European matters, and to promote economic links with the EU.
